FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A man is dead, and another is seriously hurt after a shooting broke out Wednesday morning near an apartment complex in Flagstaff.
What Happened
According to Flagstaff police, officers were called to the area of Marketplace Drive and Mall Way, just north of Route 66, around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, they found one man dead at the scene and a second man with serious injuries. The wounded man was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Sgt. Jerry Rintala with the Flagstaff Police Department said the shooting appears to have started as a physical altercation between the two men in the apartment complex parking lot. That fight escalated and ended with gunfire, leaving one of the men dead.
Investigators have not released the identities of either man involved, and it remains unclear what led to the initial argument between them.
No Threat to the Public, Police Say
Police were quick to reassure nearby residents that there is no continuing danger tied to the incident. Officers say there are no outstanding suspects connected to the shooting, since both men involved in the altercation have been accounted for. Still, residents in the immediate area were asked to avoid the scene while investigators worked to process it and gather evidence.
The homicide investigation is ongoing, and detectives are working to piece together exactly what triggered the confrontation. Because the shooting happened in a residential complex, police are also trying to determine whether anyone else in the area witnessed the fight or the moments leading up to it.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Flagstaff Police Department directly at 928-774-1414. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Silent Witness by calling 928-774-6111. Investigators say any details, even ones that may seem minor, could help them build a clearer picture of what happened before shots were fired.
This is a developing story, and police have not indicated whether charges will be filed against the surviving man once he recovers from his injuries. No further updates on his condition have been released.
The shooting adds to a string of recent violent incidents across the region, though officials have not linked this case to any other ongoing investigations. Flagstaff police say updates will be provided as the investigation continues and more information becomes available to the public.
