Cocoa, FL: Two men are facing serious charges after a joint operation between the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and Agents from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force led to their arrest earlier this month.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began after several tips came in from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding images associated with a residence on Luciano Avenue in Cocoa. Agents executed a search warrant at the home but found that the suspects were not there. Investigators soon learned the men had gone to a wooded area off Port St. John Parkway.
Suspects Located in Wooded Area
Deputies and Agents responded to the location and found the two men. Electronic devices in their possession were seized on the spot. Investigators later obtained additional search warrants to examine the devices more closely.
Forensic examiners went through the seized items and reportedly found multiple images and videos depicting child sexual abuse material.
Kelly Jamison was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of material depicting sexual conduct by a child, along with one count of possession of an image or video of animal sexual activity. Michael Akins was also arrested and charged with ten counts of possession of material depicting sexual conduct by a child.
Sheriff Ivey Praises Task Force Response
Sheriff Wayne Ivey addressed the arrests directly, saying jail is the only place for individuals involved in this kind of activity. He thanked NCMEC for quickly sharing information that helped move the investigation forward, along with the Agents who carried out the search and eventual arrests.
“There’s no excuse for anyone having images or videos like this, and if you do, just know we will find you, arrest you, and prosecute you to the fullest,” Ivey said.
The case has drawn strong reactions from community members online, many of whom praised the Sheriff’s Office for their quick work while also expressing frustration over sentencing in cases like these. Several commenters called for stronger prison terms, pointing to the lasting trauma experienced by victims of child exploitation.
The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force works alongside local law enforcement and organizations like NCMEC to identify and pursue individuals involved in the distribution or possession of child sexual abuse material. Officials say tips from organizations like NCMEC play a critical role in helping investigators act quickly once a threat is identified.
Both Jamison and Akins remain in custody as the case moves through the legal system. Further updates on court proceedings are expected as the investigation continues.
