Brandon, Florida: A man is behind bars after detectives say he used stolen personal information to walk out of two local jewelry stores with more than $20,000 worth of merchandise.
The Crime
On May 6, 2026, a man entered Jared Jewelers on West Brandon Boulevard and later visited Kay Jewelers at the Brandon Exchange.
Using someone else’s identifying information, he was able to purchase thousands of dollars in jewelry without raising immediate suspicion. It wasn’t until the true identity theft victim discovered the fraudulent charges that the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was alerted and an investigation began.
Detectives worked through surveillance footage, purchase records, and financial documentation before identifying the suspect as 32-year-old Wallace Lake. A warrant was issued for his arrest on charges including Grand Theft 2nd Degree, along with several fraud-related offenses.
The Arrest
The investigation eventually led detectives more than 1,000 miles away to Mount Vernon, New York. On July 14, 2026, members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office coordinated with local law enforcement in Westchester County to track down and arrest Lake, bringing the monthslong case to a close.
Sheriff Chad Chronister praised the effort behind the arrest, saying that stolen identities and stolen jewelry might cross state lines, but justice does not stop at the county line. He added that detectives will pursue cases as far as necessary to hold criminals accountable and protect residents.
