Sarasota, Florida, police have arrested a 17-year-old Manatee County teen in connection with a fatal shooting that left an 18-year-old man dead earlier this week.
William Rosencrantz was taken into custody on Wednesday and now faces a second-degree murder charge, according to the Sarasota Police Department. Because he is being charged with a felony, Florida law allows his name to be released publicly even though he is a juvenile.
How the shooting unfolded
Officers were sent to the area near 15th Street and Central Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, after receiving a call about a person lying on the ground and bleeding. When police arrived, they immediately began performing CPR and continued until paramedics reached the scene.
Despite those efforts, the victim did not survive. He died from a gunshot wound while being taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, according to investigators.
Police have not released the identity of the man who was killed. Authorities also have not said what led to the shooting or whether the teen suspect and the victim knew one another before the incident. That part of the investigation remains ongoing.

Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche credited his department for moving fast on the case, noting that closing out a homicide investigation in under 48 hours takes real dedication from officers and detectives committed to public safety.
The arrest came less than two days after the deadly shooting, a pace that police officials described as a reflection of coordinated work between patrol officers and criminal investigators. Detectives were able to piece together evidence quickly enough to identify Rosencrantz as a suspect and take him into custody before the week was out.
The Sarasota Police Department says the investigation is still active. Detectives are continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and they are asking the public for help filling in the remaining gaps, including a possible motive and the relationship, if any, between the two young men involved.
