Mundelein, Illinois — A gunman shot two people Tuesday morning at an apartment complex in Mundelein, killing a man and seriously wounding a woman in what investigators are calling a targeted, domestic-related incident.
Shooting Leads to High-Speed Pursuit
Mundelein police, along with the Mundelein Fire Department and Countryside Fire Protection District, were called around 11:40 a.m. to the 500 block of Deepwoods Drive at the Diamond Lane Apartments after callers reported that two people had been shot and one was not responding.
When officers arrived, they found a man and a woman, both suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died. His identity has not yet been released, and the Lake County Coroner’s Office is conducting an autopsy to confirm the cause of death. The woman was also taken to a hospital with serious injuries, but she is expected to survive.
Investigators quickly gathered a description of the suspect and the car he was believed to be driving, a Chevrolet Blazer, and shared that information with law enforcement agencies across the region. About an hour later, the vehicle was spotted in Chicago, prompting a large-scale response that included a police helicopter tracking the car as it traveled south on Interstate 94.
Officers eventually stopped the vehicle near 130th Street on the southbound side of the interstate, close to the Indiana border. Both occupants, an adult man and an adult woman, were ordered out at gunpoint and taken into custody. Authorities say the woman had been driving, while the man is considered the person of interest in the shooting. As of Tuesday evening, no charges had been filed.
Community Left Shaken After Manhunt
The shooting triggered a heavy police presence throughout Lake County, with officers carrying rifles setting up a perimeter near Route 45 and drones deployed overhead to assist in the search. The Lake County Major Crime Task Force, made up of investigators from multiple local agencies, responded to the scene to lead the investigation.
Detectives spent hours at the apartment complex and the neighboring Deep Wood Plaza shopping center, photographing the scene, interviewing witnesses, and checking with nearby businesses to piece together what led to the shooting. Task force investigators and Mundelein police detectives say they are continuing to actively investigate the circumstances surrounding the homicide.
Authorities have not released the names of either the victims or the two people taken into custody, and it remains unclear what specific charges, if any, will be filed against the man believed to be responsible for the shooting. Officials say more details are expected as the investigation continues.
